The Middle School History Club invites interested students and staff to a presentation by Vana Carmona titled “Enslavement in Maine” on Tuesday, February 14 at 2:30-3:30 in the Middle School Library.

Vana is the founder of the Prince Project, a database of people of color living in Maine prior to 1800. In addition, she is a Docent at several local historic sites and does presentations to schools and historical societies. Vana’s interest in this subject began over 9 years ago with her discovery that some of her own ancestors had been slave owners.

This presentation will include a discussion of some of the known slaves and their owners in Windham and surrounding areas during the 17th and 18th centuries, their daily lives, how slavery in Maine differed from slavery in the South, and the ending of slavery in Maine.

We look forward to seeing you as we learn more about this historical issue.
